Happy New Year!
A goal of mine for 2008 is to send you a short newsletter each Mon. to give you a suggestion to work on for the week or to share with you something new that I have learned. (This week ended up longer because I am giving you examples that you can read if you like.)
Have you made any New Year’s resolutions?
Here is a suggestion.
The three major areas in our life are health, finances, and relationships (which includes God, yourself, other people, your community, and the earth). You can pick one or two items from all three areas or pick the area that is really causing you pain right now or you are kicking yourself because another year is gone and you still haven’t accomplished it.
What changes would you like to have by the end of the year? Write it down as your goal, then write down a few steps on how you can accomplish it, then get your planner and schedule in when you will do it, then spend 5 minutes a day visualizing what it will look and feel like to reach that goal.
Below are suggestions from each area. Read them all or pick the one that pertains to you.
Financial example:
Make a goal to have $10,000 in the bank by 12/31/08.
Make your goal a positive statement of what you want to focus on. Don’t say I want to be out of debt because it puts your attention on debt. You want your attention on more money. Brainstorm about what you could do to reach this goal. Some suggestions are: get a part-time job, reduce spending, (some people call this the latte factor for instance $5 a day for a latte adds up to $150 a month or cigarettes, pop, etc. Dani Johnson talks about the fat in our budget most people can come up with about $300-$1,000 a month that they spend each month that could be used to pay off debt or put into savings), start a business, etc. Now look at your planner schedule a time to see where you can cut costs, look for a job, or call me about starting a home based business. Just keep scheduling your next step so you do it. Spend a few minutes every morning and night imagining what it feels like not worrying about money, being able to buy whatever you want, having a job you love, etc. Remember you are brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous and with God anything is possible, even the impossible!
Health example:
Your goal is to be strong and healthy wearing a perfect size 10 by 12/31/08, or whatever. (Perhaps stay away from how much weight you want to lose. You want to focus on being healthy.)
You decide you want to eat 5 vegetables a day, 1 or 2 fruits, eat from a small plate so you don’t eat so much, walk 3 times a week, and 15 minutes 3 times a week of strength training. Write fruits and vegetables on your grocery list, write on your planner what day and time to eat your vegetables, schedule a time to walk and strength train do-15 minutes a day or 30 minutes 3 times a week it doesn’t matter which, they both work. The latest thing I have seen is to do them at the same time. Do your weight training first, then the walk a few minutes in the morning and evening.
Imagine what it will feel like to be healthy and strong. To have nice new clothes. To feel good about yourself. Remember you are brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous and with God anything is possible, even the impossible!
Relationship example:
Your goal is to have a great relationship with your spouse by 12/31/08. You decide to have a date once a week. Get the book The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman and determine your spouses love language. Whatever their love language is, speak that language 5 times a week.
In your planner schedule your date time, a time to get the book, read it, and incorporate it into your spouses life. In your minds eye, see your spouse and say to them, "I am sorry. Please forgive me. I love you. I thank you." Just keep repeating those lines when you think of them through out the day.
Every morning and evening imagine what you want the relationship to look like. Remember what it was like when you fell in love, etc. Remember you are brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous and with God anything is possible, even the impossible!
